05.- Carlos II (1661 - 1700)

Carlos II by Claudio CoelloMaria Luisa of Orleans

Carlos II was born on November 6th, 1661, son of Felipe IV and Mariana of Austria.

He became king in 1665, but different people, among them his mother, reigned in his name until he was 18 years old.

That same year he married Maria Luisa of Orleans. The marriage lasted ten years, but they had no children.

Immediately he married Maria Anna of Neuburg, but she had no children either, although she pretended to be pregnant at least 10 times in order to influence her husband and favour Austrian Maria Anna of Neuburginterests against the French ones.
Felipe IV had left Spain in a difficult economic, political and social situation and Carlos II was unable to solve these problems, even worse, Spain fought against France in two wars.
Carlos II was a sick, weak and mentally unstable person. He did not receive a formal education, probably because they all thought that he would die young. He himself knew that he was not clever enough to reign and so he left this task in the hands of different ministers.

As he did not have any children, people started to believe that he was under a spell and called him Carlos II the Bewitched.
Without a son to inherit his reign, other kings wanted to govern the country and the War of the Spanish Succession began and lasted until 1714.

Finally a new era had begun, it was time for the Bourbon Dynasty.
