Torre del Oro - a bar you should not visit

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

As you can imagine Plaza Mayor is full of bars with terraces prepared to receive as many visitors as possible. Plaza Mayor isPlaza Mayor not only a meeting place but probablu also the most visited place inMadrid. Many tourists spend hours here watching  people pass by.

Many of these bars are quite expensive, butthis is somethign we all know. You pay for your drink and for the place you are staying. This is something everybody takes into account. But at least what you take should be good, expensive but good.

One of these bars in La Torre del Oro, located next to the Tourist Office (Casa de la Panaderia). There tapas are not only incredibly expensive but also of bad quality. For example, fresh fried anchovies cost about 18€; you get exactly 9 (yes, 9) and they are inedible.

So it is better to try anywhere else!

Goya in Times of War - Prado Museum, Madrid

Monday, April 14th, 2008

This  year Spain, and specially Madrid, commemorates the bicentenary of the uprising against the French invasion inBandit killing a Woman by Goya 1808.
One of the main events is the exhibition dedicated to the paintings and drawings Goya made related to this topic in the Prado Museum.
The two main paintings Goya painted are two big canvases about the events that took place on May 2nd and 3rd. Both have been restored.
There are also about 200 works by Goya, some of them belonging to privat collections.
During Jose Bonaparte´s reign the artist still worked as court painter, although at the same time he painted some drawings emphasizing the cruelty and violence of war.
It seems that his two most famous paintings about the events that took place in May were painted after Fernando VII´s return to Spain. Again he tries to show the madness of war.
This is the most important exhibition dedicated to Goya since 1996.
The exhibition will be open to the public until July 13th.

Opening hours:

From Tuesday to Sunday from 0900 to 2000.
Closed on Mondays and May 1rst.
Price: €9,-
Free entrance from Tuesday to Saturday from 1800 to 2000 and on Sundays from 1700 to 2000.

Fernando Alonso´s Renault in Madrid

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

 Renault 28

If you want to see Alonso´s Renault, you just have to go to Paseo de la Castellana, 33. The insurance company, Mutua Madrileña, one of Alonso´s sponsors, presents the new Renault in its hall.

Unfortunately one cannot sit inside as the steeringwheel cannot be taken out, but anyway, it is an opportunity to have a close look at this Formula 1 car.
