A.- The Habsburg Dynasty

It was not until Fernando and Isabel, the Catholic Monarchs, that Spain became  a unity. And it was not until Felipe II, their great-grandson, that Madrid became its capital. From that moment on all monarchs would influence the city, specially with their projects regarding town-planning, but also with their wars, their taxes and their way of life.

This is why the history of Madrid as capital cannot be separated from the history of the Spanish Monarchy.
